Cochlear implants (CIs) are devices implanted into the ear to restore hearing to deafened individuals. People who use cochlear implants can perceive speech as well as a normal-hearing person. However, the quality of the speech heard by a CI user is different than speech heard by a normal-hearing person. Our goal is to create and validate a novel instrument to both characterize speech and evaluate speech enjoyment or appraisal in the cochlear implant user population. We plan for this instrument to have potential for clinical use in evaluating speech quality, identifying characteristics commonly used to characterize speech, and identifying speech processing strategies already underscoring better speech quality.
