Additional Study Information:

This study will help us learn if vaccinated people can still be infected with SARS-CoV-2, and if they are able to spread the virus to other people. The answer to this question can have an important impact on how soon we can get back to school, work and life. The study is a two-arm trial where half of participants will be randomly selected to receive the vaccine right away at enrollment, while the other half will get the vaccine four months later. All participants will know which arm of the trial they are in at enrollment and all will ultimately receive the vaccine. 12,000 participants will be enrolled in the study, as well as about 25,500 close contacts of participants who will be invited to participate in the study. In addition, an observational cohort of those who refuse COVID vaccination will also be enrolled. Throughout the study period, all participants will complete questionnaires via the eDiary app and be required to provide blood samples. In addition, study participants will be asked to collect daily nasal swabs that will be batched and sent to a central laboratory for further analysis, enabling researchers to determine when the infection occurred, how much virus was present in the nose, and to perform genomic sequencing of the viral samples. Participants will be notified of any positive COVID test results. Genomic sequencing will help demonstrate whether coronavirus variants play a role in the vaccines ability to prevent infection and transmission. You will be compensated for all study visits.
