Additional Study Information: The Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience (SCAN) Lab is currently running research studies to investigate emotion regulation. How we respond to stress is a major determiner of well-being. This experiment tests the core hypothesis that hypnosis can provide a powerful psychological tool for regulating negative emotions. Participants would be randomly chosen to either practice self-hypnosis or listen to calming audio. Participants will be asked to complete some, or all of the following over the course of the next few months: a baseline online survey (1 hour, earn $20), a group training session (1 hour, earn $20), a training session with a hypnotherapist (1 hour, earn $20), two weeks of daily practice including a short check-in with a hypnotherapist (.5 hour/day and $10 for check-in, earn $150), an fMRI scan (training time and 1 hour in the scanner, earn $50), and twice-daily surveys for two weeks (total .5hour/day, earn $150). Hypnosis will be included in this experiment. The Principal Investigator of the lab is Dr. Kevin Ochsner, whose lab is located in the Department of Psychology in Schermerhorn Hall.
