We are conducting genetic research studies to better understand the causes of boils and pimples and are interested in diseases such as acne and hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). Human genetic studies have an excellent track record for providing new knowledge about causes of disease that can sometimes illuminate new ways to cure disease. The success of genetic studies is directly linked to the number of research participants willing to donate DNA and RNA. Your participation is vital for the success of this work. We will collect a blood sample from you. We will wipe the skin on your arm with alcohol to clean it, and then we will insert a small needle into a vein to collect about 1-2 teaspoons of blood. We will use your blood sample to isolate your DNA for genetic analyses. Some research participants may be invited to provide skin samples. This would involve two small punch biopsies, one to obtain skin affected by pimples or boils and a site-matched area of unaffected skin. We will use these samples to obtain RNA to study gene expression. Because this is a research study, we will not be able to provide information back to you about your particular DNA. We will be able to share information about patterns that we detect.
